5.3 Magnitudes earthquake strikes Malang today (October 22, 2021), at around 09:23 A.M. According to Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was centered at 78 kilometers of the southwest of Malang Regency at 33 kilometers depth.

Even though the earthquake does not potentially cause a tsunami, it brings on people’s solitudes and fears. Detik.com, through its page reporting that tens of students’ parents suddenly trickle into the school’s square soon after having felt quake’s tremor. This happens at a Senior High School (SMA) 1 in Sumberpucung, one of the nearest district to quake’s center.

Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), on a special study about the potentiality earthquake of the southern seashore of Java in 2018, revealed that the coastline would be swept by a tsunami as high as 20 meters. By the mid of 2021, BMKG also predicted that the southern coastline of East Java would have been struck by a tsunami.

The current calamity may cause the feeling of sacred amidst residents along the coastline. But, BMKG officer states that residents shouldn’t be too fear.
